Well, living on an island in the Mediterranean sea might make you a rather peculiar soul due to the fact that your world is rather small and slightly rough edged. For a musician this might be an advantage as he could be forced to inject even more of his very own mind and creativity into the brew of influences he draws from outer sources which are for sure scarce. Well, in case of MEGAHERA and their now second album “Condemned to insanity” this cannot be more true. The basic influences they have are moderate west coast thrash metal from the USA, early EXODUS, METALLICA, HEATHEN and that stuff to be more precise plus a big dipper of ancient Italian progressive rock heroism. You get an impression of the latter from the rather uncommon introduction piece of this album which is an instrumental with mainly acoustic and clean electric guitars plus a whole lotta love, no, analogue keyboard instruments with a definite 70s feel. And as you are about to consider MEGAHERA one of these retrospective art rock epics that have appeared in dozens within the last fifteen years, they change over to hard whipping, dry guitars letting loose magical chord progressions lying on a basement of rather relaxed but forceful driving rhythms. Interwoven with these heavy axe eruptions you will find utterly intense melodic gestures of the greatest kind from the lead guitars giving these songs a deep and wickedly epic atmosphere you as the listener may drown within. On top of all these instrumental structures you will find a voice in mid ranges with a surely rough, yet melodic expression. This guy has balls and charisma and he knows to tell a haunting story, which builds a bridge to the epic approach of the instrumental background. I personally recall two epic semi thrash metal masterpieces from England having been released in 1986 and 1992, namely “Where legend began” by the ENGLISH DOGS, a band that started as punk rock and got back to punk rock after their progressive thrash masterpiece and “Kin” by cult band XENTRIX, their most relaxed and melodic, yet still their most intense album as well. And MEGAHERA take that even further bringing in the Italian epic and progressive music from the past 40 years to push the borders of their very own vision of power thrash metal into areas yet unexplored. So, with “Condemned to insanity” these cats are definitely capable to discover new exciting dimensions of heavy rock music with a rather ancient and traditional spirit. If you love your metal with an epic size, go ahead and grab your copy now.
