A mechanized, unrelenting assault of warped vocals, incisionous riffs and programmed drums. Cold and bleak music for a world of the same ilk. Insipid Emaciation might take the award for the ugliest, skuzz-fuckiest black metal album to appear in this week's new arrivals list. No joke - this disc is so blown and gnarly sounding, it cleans all of the snot right out of me everytime I throw it into the stereo. Merlot is another one-man black metal outfit, but this sure isn't more of that depressing bedroom gloom you usually get with loner BM outfits. For one thing, the fucking band is called Merlot; I can't tell if it's named after the wine as I've been hoping, as Merlot is totally sans web presence. For another, these songs have much more to do with rabid brain-damaged drum machine thrash of bands like Vilently Ill than run-of-the-mill black metal. The drumming is so fast and out of control it's ridiculous, and often collapse into some weird random stuttering fill or endless machine-gun blast. Riffs are totally in-the-red and distorted to the max, songs like "Scorn" and "Retched Semen" downshift into gruesome thrashing blackpunk, and the whole album is covered in distortion and hiss and grating industrial noise. The vocals might be the most over the top part of Merlot's sound; his sickening feral screams are squeezed through a heavy filter of blown speakers and vomit, and they are mixed so far up in the mix that his choking and gasping almost drowns out the music at times, which actually just makes this sound even more insane and vicious. And the lyrics...I can't figure out what in the hell most of them are about, but they read like a mixture of goregrind deliriums, stream-of-consciousness drugthink, and seething psychopathic outrage. But in spite of how crazed and noisy and hateful this music is, Merlot manages to craft their intensely fast and blown-out eruptions of black metal into something that's pretty catchy, and there's a ton of epic hooks and melodic leads lodged within these songs. Imagine an even more distorted, blown-out Vondur, or a hardcore-thrash infatuated Marduk being blasted through a massive transistor radio - chaotic, blazing savagery that fans of fucked-up, noisy black metal should seriously check out.
